Daily News

Founded in 1919, the New York Daily News was the first successful tabloid newspaper in the United States. The paper attracted readers by emphasizing sensational stories, lurid photographs and other entertainment features. The newspaper had a large circulation, and it was locked in a fierce battle for readers with its rival, the even more sensational New York Post. The Daily News was also one of the first newspapers to use wirephoto services and built a large staff of photographers.

The paper was often used to investigate political wrongdoing and social intrigue, such as the scandal surrounding Wallis Simpson and her relationship with King Edward VIII before his abdication. The newspaper also favored a large staff of writers and emphasized editorials and cartoons. The paper often ran full-page advertisements and special inserts, and it also distributed a Saturday edition.

In the twentieth century, the newspaper continued to publish a broad range of articles and attract a large readership. It consolidated its position as the dominant urban daily by purchasing the Manhattan-based Associated Press in 1928 and moving its headquarters to 450 West 33rd Street, which straddled the railroad tracks that led into Pennsylvania Station.

The paper also began to build its own television and radio stations. In 1948 the News established WPIX-TV in the city, whose call letters were derived from its nickname, “New York’s Picture Newspaper.” The News also purchased the city’s broadcast license for WFAN-AM and later built a radio station in Brooklyn.

Today, the Daily News is a major online source of national and international news. Its website has a wide variety of information and is updated frequently. The newspaper has a strong focus on local news, but it also provides extensive coverage of world events and political happenings. Its news section has a variety of different types of content, including video and audio clips. The newspaper’s website also has a blog section and numerous other interactive features.

The Daily News is published Monday through Friday during the academic year. The paper also produces several special issues throughout the year that celebrate the Yale community. The paper is independent in both financial and editorial independence from the university. The newspaper is a member of the National Newspaper Association and the Yale Daily News Historical Archive has collected it since 1996. Newspapers should be stored flat in quality folders and boxes that fully enclose them. They should not be intermingled with other materials, such as letters or photographs, which can transfer acidic stains. Keeping newspapers flat will also help prevent them from becoming brittle. Newspaper clippings should be stored in clear polyester sleeves, which will protect them from acidic paper. These sleeves are available in many sizes to accommodate both single-page and full-sized sheets.
